Taizé heading to the 100 years of Brother Roger

After holding a conference of Lent in the Basilica of Notre-Dame in Paris last Sunday, Brother Alois went to Rome for his customary annual visit.

Last Monday, March 16, Pope Francis received him in a private audience, for the second time in his pontificate. The Pope proved himself to be highly attentive to the ecumenical vocation of the Community and to their activity of welcoming young people to Taizé. He will pray in communion with all those who will be gathered in Taizé on August 16, which will mark the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Brother Roger and the tenth anniversary of his death.

Brother Alois thanked the Pope for announcing last week a Holy Year of Mercy. He also told him that the words he used to speak of the love and forgiveness of God were very close to those used by Brother Roger. According to the Pope, mercy is the very heart of the Gospel.

A “Deutsche Grammophon” compact disc for sale

On March 16, Deutsche Grammophon / Universal Music has released a CD entitled “Taizé – Chants de paix et d’unité” (Taizé – songs of peace and unity). This CD, the result of an unprecedented partnership between the Community and an international brand, presents songs played by an ensemble of young musicians from different countries, on the basis of recordings made during the common prayer in July 2014, which also includes psalms and responses sung by soloist brothers. 2015 will be a year of celebrations in Taizé

In 2015, the Community of Taizé will live a year of celebrations with three anniversaries:

1. On May 12, Brother Roger would have had his 100^th birthday;
2. August 16 will be the 10th anniversary of his death;
3. On August 20 we shall recall his arrival in Taizé 75 years ago and the foundation of the Community.

The village of Taizé (Saône-et-Loire) will host throughout the year tens of thousands of young people by organizing meetings Sunday through Sunday. Also, during this year several special moments will take place.

On the agenda in the coming months

• July 5-12: religious congregations leaders and Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant young people will participate in Taizé in a “Week of reflection on the topicality of religious vocations”. In particular, the Fathers General of the Jesuits and the Dominicans have confirmed their presence.
• August 9-16: Thousands of young people from all around the world and hundreds of people with a special commitment in society will participate in a “Meeting for a new solidarity”, which will be the highlight of the celebrations of the year.
• August 16: Prayer in memory of Brother Roger, with the participation of Church leaders, some representatives of other religions and young people from all continents.
• August 30 – September 5: International Symposium on “The contribution of Brother Roger to theological thought” dedicated to theology students up to 40 years old, with the participation of Protestant, Orthodox, and Roman Catholic researchers from different countries.

Dopo aver tenuto una conferenza di Quaresima a Notre-Dame di Parigi domenica scorsa, frère Alois ha raggiunto Roma per la consueta visita annuale. Lunedì 16 marzo, papa Francesco lo ha ricevuto in udienza privata, la seconda volta nel suo pontificato. Il Papa si è mostrato molto attento alla vocazione ecumenica della Comunità e all’accoglienza dei giovani a Taizé. Egli pregherà in comunione con tutti quelli che saranno riuniti a Taizé il prossimo 16 agosto, centesimo anniversario della nascita di frère Roger e decimo della sua morte.

Frère Alois ha ringraziato il Papa d’aver annunciato la settimana scorsa un anno della misericordia e gli ha anche detto quanto le parole che utilizzava per parlare dell’amore e del perdono di Dio fossero vicine a quelle di frère Roger. Per il Papa, la misericordia è il cuore stesso del Vangelo.

Un album prodotto da «Deutsche Grammophon» in vendita

Il 16 marzo, Deutsche Grammophon / Universal Music ha pubblicato un CD intitolato “Taizé – Chants de paix et d’unité”. Questo disco, frutto di una collaborazione inedita tra la Comunità e un marchio internazionale, presenta dei canti interpretati da una corale di giovani e strumentisti di diversi paesi, qualche registrazione effettuata durante la preghiera comune in luglio 2014, e anche dei salmi e responsori cantati da fratelli solisti. 2015 sarà un anno di celebrazioni a Taizé

Nel 2015, la Comunità di Taizé vivrà un anno di celebrazioni con tre anniversari:

1. il 12 maggio, frère Roger avrebbe avuto 100 anni;
2. il 16 agosto sarà il 10° anniversario della sua morte;
3. il 20 agosto ricorderà il suo arrivo a Taizé  75 anni fa e la fondazione della Comunità.

Il villaggio di Taizé (Saône-et-Loire) accoglierà durante tutto l’anno decine di migliaia di giovani per incontri da domenica a domenica. Inoltre, durante quest’anno si succederanno diversi momenti particolari.

In agenda nei prossimi mesi

• 5-12 luglio: responsabili di congregazioni e giovani religiosi cattolici, ortodossi e protestanti parteciperanno a Taizé a una “Settimana di riflessione sull’attualità della vocazione religiosa”. In particolare, il Padre generale dei gesuiti e quello dei domenicani hanno confermato la loro presenza.
• 9-16 agosto: Migliaia di giovani del mondo intero e un centinaio di persone impegnate in particolar modo nella società parteciperanno a un “Raduno per una nuova solidarietà”, che sarà il punto culminante delle celebrazioni dell’anno.
• 16 agosto: Preghiera in memoria di frère Roger, con la presenza di responsabili di Chiese, qualche rappresentante di altre religioni e giovani di tutti i continenti.
• 30 agosto al 5 settembre: Colloquio internazionale su “l’apporto di frère Roger al pensiero teologico” per studenti in teologia fino a 40 anni, con la partecipazione di ricercatori protestanti, ortodossi e cattolici di diversi Paesi.
