A parish church on a summer morning. It is almost empty. Only a few people who went to church to bring the world in their prayer. We imagine them elderly, like the priest who presides over the assembly. Born in 1930, ordained a priest in 1958, Father Jacques Hamel has dedicated his life to proclaiming hope, never seeking honors. He still services with humility, like many other priests “in active retirement”. The result, this brutal irruption of barbarism, we refuse to describe. The only words that are on our mouths are those spoken by the archbishop of Rouen from the World Youth Day in Krakow: “I cry to God”. They belong to Psalm 129: “Out of the depths I have cried unto Thee, O Lord! Lord, hear my voice. Let Thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication!”.

It is a cry of pain, a cry of anguish in front of the mystery of evil. A cry of anger in the face of the fanatical violence that is plunging our land, our world into blood. All these unarmed people, all these lives cut short, men, women, children, without distinction of nationality or religion. From Baghdad to Orlando, from Nice to Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray… No cause can justify such an abomination. The slightest indulgence in such acts, even the one that takes the form of cowardly silence, must be condemned.

But our cry to God is also a plea for help to resist the temptation of revenge. “The Catholic Church cannot take other weapons than prayer and fraternity among men”, continued Bishop Dominique Lebrun before leaving Poland to return to his diocese. Fraternity, a difficult word to hear in the chain of tragedies. It reminds us that answer hatred with hatred would be the triumph of evil.

Una chiesa parrocchiale in una mattina d’estate. È quasi vuota. Solo poche persone che sono andate a messa per portare il mondo nella loro preghiera. Ce li immaginiamo anziani, come il sacerdote che presiede l’assemblea. Nato nel 1930, ordinato sacerdote nel 1958, padre Jacques Hamel ha dedicato la sua vita ad annunciare la speranza, senza mai cercare onori. E rende ancora servizio con umiltà, come tanti altri sacerdoti “in ritiro attivo”. Il seguito, questa irruzione brutale di barbarie, ci si rifiuta di descriverla. Le uniche parole che vengono sulle nostre bocche sono quelle pronunciate dall’arcivescovo di Rouen dalla GMG di Cracovia: “Io grido a Dio”. Vengono dal Salmo 129: “Dal profondo a te grido, o Signore, ascolta la mia voce! Il tuo orecchio sia attento al grido della mia preghiera!”.

È un grido di dolore, un grido di angoscia di fronte al mistero del male. Un grido di rabbia di fronte alla violenza fanatica che insanguina la nostra terra, il nostro mondo. Tutte queste persone disarmate, tutte queste vite stroncate, uomini, donne, bambini, senza distinzione di nazionalità o di religione. Da Baghdad a Orlando, da Nizza a Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray… Nessuna causa può giustificare un simile abominio. La minima indulgenza verso tali atti, anche quella che prende la forma del silenzio vile, deve essere condannata.

Ma il nostro grido a Dio è anche una richiesta di aiuto per resistere alla tentazione della vendetta. “La Chiesa cattolica non può prendere altre armi che la preghiera e la fraternità tra gli uomini”, ha detto ancora il vescovo Dominique Lebrun prima di lasciare la Polonia per tornare nella sua diocesi. Fraternità, una parola difficile da sentire nella catena di tragedie. Ci ricorda che rispondere all’odio con l’odio sarebbe il trionfo del male.

Interview with Msgr. André Marceau, Bishop of Nice, who was on the seafront in Nice a few hours before the attack that caused 84 deaths. The bishop announces that the Church will organize several moments of prayer in the Cathedral Friday, July 15th to collect “the cries of sorrow” of those who desire it.

Where were you on the evening of Thursday July 14th, at the time of the attack on the Promenade des Anglais?

“I left the Promenade at 19 after attending the official ceremony of the 14th of July. The atmosphere was quiet and sunny, with people on vacation, away from the scenes of horror of a few hours later. Last night, after learning of the attack, I was constantly kept informed. This morning, the streets of Nice are very quiet. It is the calm of death, which makes the atmosphere very oppressive”.

How do you react to the heavy toll?

“Reacting to this attack is to say first of all that in our department we are facing indiscriminate violence. It means also asking ourselves: what can inhabit the heart of a man, when he acts, and what perpetuates this act of hatred, savagery and death. These are serious questions, which are let with no answer. We are witnesses to unbearable scenes of war. And it is inhumanity before our eyes.

The role of the Church in this tragic moment is saying words of consolation, compassion, and to be closer to those who suffer and have lost friends or members of their family. We must open a window so that these scenes of darkness of the human soul can be a bit enlightened. We believe that compassion and consolation are a way to man’s heart to be touched by love”.

Intervista con mons. André Marceau, vescovo di Nizza, che era su Promenade des Anglais poche ore prima dell’attentato che ha causato 84 morti. Il vescovo annuncia che la Chiesa organizzerà diversi momenti di preghiera in cattedrale venerdì 15 luglio per raccogliere “le grida di dolore” di coloro che lo desiderano.

Dove si trovava la sera di giovedì 14 luglio, al momento dell’attacco sulla Promenade des Anglais?

“Ho lasciato la Promenade alle 19 dopo aver assistito alla cerimonia ufficiale del 14 luglio. C’era un’atmosfera tranquilla e soleggiata, con persone in vacanza, lontano dalle scene di orrore di poche ore più tardi. Questa notte, dopo aver appreso dell’attentato, mi sono tenuto costantemente al corrente. Questa mattina, le strade di Nizza sono molto tranquille. È la calma della morte, che fa regnare un clima molto pesante”.

Come reagisce al pesante tributo?

“Reagire a questo attentato è dire prima di tutto che ci troviamo ad affrontare nel nostro dipartimento una violenza indiscriminata. È anche porsi una domanda: che cosa può abitare il cuore di un uomo, nel momento in cui agisce, e che cosa perpetua questo atto di odio, di barbarie e di morte? Queste sono domande serie, e che lasciano senza risposta. Siamo testimoni di scene di guerra, insopportabili. È la disumanità sotto i nostri occhi.

Il ruolo della Chiesa in questo tragico momento è dire parole di consolazione, di compassione, ed essere più vicini a coloro che soffrono e hanno perso amici o familiari. Dobbiamo aprire una finestra perché s’illuminino un poco queste scene di oscurità dell’animo umano. Noi crediamo che la compassione e la consolazione siano un modo per il cuore dell’uomo di essere toccato dall’amore”.

The President of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (Comece), Cardinal Reinhard Marx, issued the following statement following the attacks in Brussels:

“The attacks at Brussels Airport and on the Metro in the city have upset me deeply and filled me with sadness. My thoughts and prayers go out at this moment to the dead, the injured and their dear ones. This is Holy Week and it is a time we pray with particularly intensity for victims of violence and for those close to them.

Today’s events have touched me profoundly. My European commitments bring me frequently to Brussels and I feel particularly close to the staff of the COMECE Secretariat, based in Brussels, in this current situation”.

Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and President of Ccee, wrote:

“Having heard this morning the news about the attacks carried out at Brussels Airport and on the Belgian city’s underground, in the face of this callous act, I assure the victims of my prayers and express my closeness to their families.
 
At this time of anguish, I call on people not to allow themselves to be overcome by fear and to pray for peace in Europe, in the Middle East and throughout the world”.

Signore, disarmali. E disarma anche noi. – Preghiera per la pace nello spirito di Tibhirine, scritta da Frère Dominique Motte, del convento domenicano di Lille, dopo gli attacchi di Parigi (13 novembre 2015).

Disarmali: già ci si è abituati a che questa violenza estrema sia il sinistro pane quotidiano di Iraq, Siria, Palestina, Repubblica Centrafricana, Sudan, Eritrea, Afghanistan. Essa al momento ci invade. Chi non vede che a sua volta essa potrebbe suscitare in noi violenze senza fine o un progressivo cadere nella paura o nella disperazione?
Disarmali: che sorgano in mezzo a loro anche profeti, profeti che gridino la loro indignazione, la loro vergogna nel vedere tanto sfigurata l’immagine dell’uomo, l’immagine di Dio, e la loro convinzione che agendo in questo modo sicuramente si scavano definitivamente la fossa con le loro mani.
Disarmali, dandoci, se è necessario, visto che è necessario, di adottare misure per proteggere gli innocenti, con determinazione. Ma senza odio.
