Immigration

The Church, the prophetic voice of migrants

La Chiesa, voce profetica dei migranti

EN | IT – Rev. Matthew John Gardzinski (Pontifical Council for the pastoral care of Migrants and Itinerant people) at the meeting of bishops and national directors in charge of the pastoral care of migrants in Europe (Vilnius, Lithuania, 30 June – 2 July 2015): “On a political level, no single nation is capable of managing and handling adequately migration alone. It is an effect of globalization, and requires the cooperation and mutual collaboration between States and nations to approach the migration situation humanely, safeguarding the human dignity of every person”.

“They are worthy to be accepted”

“Sono degni di essere accolti”

EN | IT | FR – Have the desire to find the right balance between security and liberty, between the legitimate request of living safely at home and the cries for help of people who fear for their lives and live in insecurity in their countries affected by civil war. They have the right to dignity. They are worthy to be accepted. They are worthy to enter under our roof.

Scalabrinians’ approval, with some reserves

Il plauso con riserva degli Scalabriniani

EN | IT – While the European Commission has approved a set of measures that the European countries of the Mediterranean will be able to use to handle the emergencies of migration flows, the Scalabrinian Missionaries, even if noting a first positive sign, fail to share fully the announcement of the vice president of EU executive and representative for foreign affairs, Federica Mogherini, who stressed that “in the face of a dramatic emergency” Europe has “finally realized the urgency,” and in recent times has “made great strides” towards a “comprehensive response” to the challenges taking place in the Mediterranean.

Calais, the other “Lampedusa” of Europe

Calais, l’altra “Lampedusa” in Europa

EN | IT | FR – The situation in Calais was really tense in recent days. As he approached Easter day over 2,000 desperate people, fleeing war, injustice and poverty, have been the victims of a brutal offensive of French police and State that gathered them all in a field in a peripheral and marsh land of the industrial area close to the Day Care Centre “Jules Ferry”. The fields where Sudanese, Ethiopians, Eritreans, Afghans, Pakistanis, Iranians and Egyptians lived until recently (Tioxide, Leaderprice and Gallo) have become an expanse of waste. What remains it is bleak. The atmosphere is spooky.

An epochal change is urgently needed

Urge un cambio epocale

EN | IT – “The latest, umpteenth tragedy at sea occurred in the Sicilian Channel, which is worsening by the hour – according to a press release issued recently by the Scalabrinian Missionaries – harshly shows how Europe, an increasingly crumbling fortress, on the one hand shows itself as a champion of fundamental human rights, then also towards migrants and refugees, but on the other does not contribute effectively to the opening of legal channels for migration, as various voices have been crying out for too long”.

Spain “ bad teacher” in Europe?

España “mala maestra” en Europa?

EN | ES | IT – The intention of the Spanish government to legalize the so-called “immediate returns” of immigrants (for example, sent them back immediately where they come from) threatens the Spanish Constitution, the European legislation, international law and the Geneva Convention of the United Nations. Through a paragraph, to be introduced in the law of public security, the executive of Mariano Rajoy insists on legalizing the practice common today to deliver to Morocco, immediately and without any previous identification, immigrants who have been intercepted on the fence boundary of Ceuta and Melilla.

The hot potatoes of Europe

Les patates chaudes de l’Europe

EN | FR | IT – The sinking of Sept. 12, caused by the smugglers, which destroyed the lives of nearly 500 people in the Mediterranean Sea, was “one of the worst” accidents in recent years, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Meanwhile – a sign that candidates to leave Africa are more and more numerous – the Italian Navy reportedly rescued nearly 2,380 people last weekend, in the framework of the ‘Mare Nostrum’ programme. Near Calais, in the Pas de Calais region in France, the many exiles who have been living for more than twelve years in precarious and humiliating conditions highlight the problem of the presence of foreigners on our territory.

From “Mare nostrum” to Ukraine

Dal “Mare nostrum” all’Ucraina

EN | IT – As Migrantes Foundation, we hope that the objectives efficiently achieved by the operation ‘Mare nostrum’ can continue, reinforced throughout the Mediterranean with the involvement of European countries. In front of the Ukrainian crisis, as Migrantes we demand that a residence permit for temporary protection can be extended to all family members of the Ukrainians in Italy who request it, so as to prevent the growth of Ukrainian irregular immigration in our country.

Growing up with the refugees

Crescere con i rifugiati

EN | IT | FR – The tragedy of the 30 dead people in the hold of a barge full of more than 500 forced migrants, then carried to the port of Pozzallo by the ship of the Italian Navy used for the Mare Nostrum mission, has dramatically brought our attention to the increasingly frequent journeys of hope that are surpassing the figures of 2011, and to the responsibility of Italy and the rest of Europe in the face of this humanitarian tragedy.
